Development and nutrition. The role of social norms

Based on a review of the existing literature and a specifi c case study on Ghana, the book examines how, in developing countries, social norms – for example, inheritance systems – affect the nutritional habits and the diet of the poor, the distribution of land and the types of crops farmed by menand women, and the allocation of food within the family.


Eliana La Ferrara holds the Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Development Economics at Bocconi University in Milan. PhD from Harvard, she has been a Visiting Professor at MIT and a consultant for the World Bank.
Annamaria Milazzo received her PhD in Economics from Bocconi University. She is cu rrently a pos t-doctoral researcher in the Development Research Group of the World Bank.
